Cross Country season ends with a bang. The Central Girls Cross Country Team has had a hard run making it to state. The team’s goals, along with Coach Mark Bauder’s, were to win districts and defend their state title. The state cross country meet was held at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course, Fort Dodge, IA on October 29th, 2016. The team members who advanced to state are Ciera Deitchler, Ashley Funk, Deserai Weber, Jasmine Mueller, Danielle Weber, Ellie Kuehl, and Cassie Larson. The team also had Mackenzie Vlazny and Megan Nemechek as their alternates.
The Central Cross Country team has had a great season this year. The girls completed it with a win at districts and a second state title. They defended their title from last year’s state meet.
The girls had many goals and plans for state that they needed to secede in order to get their win. The one goal they really had to achieve was best explained by Ciera Deitchler, a sophomore at Central, she was asked what the goals and plans for running at state were. Deitchler responded with, “Our biggest goal is to get first with the amazing team we have.”
The girls team achieved their goal by using their plan which Deitchler also explained, “We each know girls from other schools that we need to run by in order to finish where we want.”
Many of the girls had their personal best times of the year at the state meet. Ciera Deitchler finished in sixth with a time of 20:12, Ashley Funk 12th at a time of 20:51, Deserai Weber 14th with a time of 20:52, Jasmine Mueller finished in 19th with a time of 21:00, Danielle Weber 21st with a time of 21:09, Ellie Kuehl finished in 49th at 22:34, and Cassie Larson Finished in 52nd with the time of 22:41. The total team score ended up being 69 which won it for the girls by 47 points.
Coach Mark Bauder was very pleased with how his girls finished the season. In an interview with Bauder he was asked how he felt about the season. Bauder’s response was, “The girls team has far exceeded my expectations.” At state Bauder also received another coach’s plaque.
The Cross Country team has had another great year. Last year the girls team won state with a team score of 66 and it was a great accomplishment for Central. The win was the first state title for the cross country team from about 42 years ago.
